Research summary
In cardiac imaging understanding what is expected to be normal (and therefore abnormal) within a certain population is fundamental to understanding and defining the concept of pathology. While this distinction is straightforward in certain cases such as the presence of a tumor or malposition of organs, understanding what the normal dimensions of cardiac chambers or what the normal parameters of cardiac function are, pose a significant challenge as different groups of individuals may not be normally equal to each other.
Several studies have shown differences in the heart dimensions among ethnic groups within a single country. The WASE Normal Values study will enroll a total of 1700 adult individuals free of known significant cardiac and lung disease. By providing a detailed description of the studied populations, the WASE study aims to:
1- Prospectively establish normal echocardiography values for chamber size and function across different countries, races and ethnicities worldwide in a multinational study.
2- Describe and characterize similarities and differences among these groups.REC name
