Research summary
Hospital wards are full of sound. There has been various studies looking at the amount of sound on wards, but very little is known about the 'lived experience' of the sound environment. This study will be using guided interviews and questionnaires to explore the meaning and impact of sounds (positive and negative) on patients, staff and visitors in two different acute ward environments - orthopaedic trauma, with a high proportion of older patients, and obstetrics with new mothers and babies. In addition we will be collecting some data on how the amount of sound varies across the wards and across time.
