  • Research summary

Programmes to get patients ready for joint replacement surgery can improve overall health, reduce surgical risks and improve their recovery. These programmes are also called prehabilitation. Research investigating prehabilitation for joint replacement surgery has mostly focussed on exercise-based programmes and research about other types of programmes is limited.

Waiting Well is prehabilitation programme at the Essex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre, East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust to support patients before joint replacement surgery. Patients are signposted to services based on their own specific need (e.g. weight management). This study aims to examine which factors determine musculoskeletal health, quality of life, emotional wellbeing and timing of surgery in patients receiving the Waiting Well prehabilitation programme prior to elective joint replacement. This study will then be able to inform a future study refining the Waiting Well programme to target these factors.

We will invite patients receiving the Waiting Well programme to participate in the study and need 115 patients to complete musculoskeletal health, quality of life and emotional wellbeing questionnaires. We will speak to up to 10 health professionals who work on the programme and up to 10 patients who received the programme and 10 nominated patient partners/carers about their views on the Waiting Well service and factors influencing musculoskeletal health, quality of life, emotional wellbeing and the timing of surgery. We will invite health professionals and patients, we need about six participants, to join a advisory group to review study findings and co-design a follow-up study. This study is funded by Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity.
