Research summary
Virtual reality has been shown to reduce pain scores in dental procedures and during dressing changes in different patient groups. It has also been shown to reduce pain and anxiety in young patients with cystic fibrosis. We want to do a pilot study exploring the feasibility and acceptability of immersive virtual reality in patients attending theatre for surgery and in critically ill patients in intensive care. We wish to investigate whether the virtual reality is easy to use in these clinical groups and assess self-reported anxiety and pain scores pre- and post-use.
We also want to trial the effect of virtual reality on anxiety levels in critical care staff members and the relatives of critically ill patients; both groups of people at high risk of stress and anxiety.REC name
