  • Research summary

Effective pain management in the healthcare setting remains a major global challenge. For example, with the persistent pain after surgery, there is a risk of drugs dependence. Thus, a continuous improvement in pain management is needed.

This problem leads to the need for a less expensive and safer alternative strategy for pain management after knee surgery without compromising patient safety.
Virtual Reality (VR) is an emergent no drug related strategy for pain relief, with strong evidence in pain reduction not only in patients in hospitals as well as the community. However, VR has not been used with adults in the orthopaedic, reason for this study.

This study aims to examine the feasibility of providing virtual reality will help to reduce pain in patients undergoing knee surgery in hospitals. This will help to identify what is important for a future study on a larger scale.

Patients would be 18 years old or over, undergoing knee surgery, able to provide written informed consent and willing to participate and to complete questionnaires. Volunteer staff will be recruited to support patients using the VR.

The VR will be provided for each participant twice a day post-operative in bed or chair, before lunch and after lunch when participants feel pain 24 hours after surgery, in a total of 3 sessions. Each VR experience is programmed to last for 7.5 minutes. Recruitment duration will be 3 months and patients will remain in the study for up to 3 sessions.

After the use of the VR, patients and volunteer staff will be asked to complete a questionnaire to get their opinion about the experience.
