Research summary
Our proposed study seeks to capture and identify volatile organic compounds released from skin cancer lesions with the aim of identifying potential new biomarkers of skin cancer.
In a pilot study we developed a technique to capture and identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from skin cancer lesions, and trialled the approach on 20 skin cancer patients. The clinical study has demonstrated that we can collect and identify specific skin cancer VOCs, and our data has indicated preliminary VOC which could have potential as diagnostic biomarkers in the future. The current proposal features a larger clinical study utilising our technology to validate the identity of the biomarkers in a larger cohort.
