Research summary
The aim of the study is to compare patient outcomes following removal of the womb via two keyhole techniques (hysterectomy). One involves access via the abdomen (total laparoscopic hysterectomy -TLH) and the other is through the vagina (VNOTES). The VNOTES procedure is newer technique which started in 2018 at Darent Valley Hospital, while TLH is a long established procedure.
Assessing patient outcomes of these procedures will provide data which will help the patients when deciding the route of surgery. The data will allow us to provide patient with information on recovery and quality of life after the procedures as well as information on complications and sexual function. The patients will all be from Darent Valley Hospital under 2 experienced consultants where the study will also be conducted. Patients will be seen in the gynaecology outpatient clinic and those for hysterectomy and fulfilling the inclusion criteria will be randomised to each procedure following consent to participate. Patients will have a study leaflet as well as leaflet on the procedure. They will also consented on the day of operation.
After the procedure patients will be asked to fill questionnaires between 1-12 weeks. We anticipate that the study will take 12 months to complete.REC name
