Research summary
The EssenCES is used to measure social climate per ward setting. Social climate includes (i) patient experienced safety, which is patient perception of tension and perceived threat of aggression and violence; (ii) ‘patient cohesion’, which is mutual support, the kind typically seen as characteristic of therapeutic communities; and (iii) ‘therapeutic hold’, which is the perception of the climate in that it is supportive of therapy and therapeutic change. The EssenCES has been recognised by the Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) and has now been implemented as a payment by results framework for ward performance (Department of Health, 2008). Social climate has also be found to be linked to success of treatment interventions. However, the EssenCES has mainly been validated in high and medium secure units, which have found varying results of the validity of the EssenCES measuring social climate. This study intends to review the validity and reliability of the EssenCES in a low secure learning disability forensic mental health setting.
