Research summary
The study aims to improve how visual symptoms are explained to patients with retinal disease, by creating personalised visual simulations based on their own retinal scans. Using optical coherence tomography (OCT/OCTA ) images already obtained as part of routine care, the VISULISE software generates simulated “what the patient sees” images. VISULISE is an educational tool for patients and represents a Visual Interpretation and Simulation platform Utilising their Linked Imaging to represent their Specific visual Experience.
Participants will review up to three types of simulations (foundation, complex, and refined) for both distance and near tasks, and will rate how accurately each represents their real visual experience. Their feedback is used to iteratively refine the simulation when needed.
A clinician will independently assess the scientific plausibility and usefulness of the images for patient communication.
The study is conducted in a single visit and involves no additional clinical procedures. The expected benefit is the development of more accurate and meaningful communication tools that help patients better understand their retinal condition and its visual impact.
The study will last 18 months, and activities will take place in the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital
