Research summary
Visual snow is a highly unrecognized syndrome of neurological origin, which can be extremely disabling for sufferers. It is characterized by chronic unremitting visual symptoms that occupy the entire visual field. By analysing the genetic, proteomic and cerebral spinal fluid profiles of patients, this study will help gain much needed information on the underlying biology of visual snow and hopefully allow targeted treatment strategies in the future. Adult suffers of visual snow under the age of 65 would be eligible if deemed clinically able to undergo study procedures. The primary site is the Clinical Research Facility at King's College Hospital with at least one international partner hospital. The study will last up to 18 months, with participant involvement approximately one month. Participants will undergo blood and cerebrospinal fluid sampling (group 1) or saliva sampling if either procedure in group 1 is not appropriate (group 2). Both groups will also complete various questionnaires to collect valuable data on their condition.
