Research summary
This study will collect information to assess whether a smartphone-based technology can accurately estimate the blood pressure and pulse rate of people with heart failure without physical contact. Heart failure is a long-term condition in which the heart does not pump blood around the body as effectively as it should. People with heart failure often need regular monitoring, but current methods such as cuff-based blood pressure devices can be uncomfortable or inconvenient to use.
The technology being studied uses a smartphone or tablet camera to record a short video of a person’s face. It analyses very small changes in skin colour that occur with each heartbeat. This signal, known as remote photoplethysmography (rPPG), may provide a simpler and more accessible way to monitor health in the future.
This study will recruit adults aged 18 to 85 years with chronic heart failure from clinics at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Participants will attend one study visit lasting around 60 minutes. During the visit, standard blood pressure measurements will be taken using a cuff, and heart rate will be recorded using an ECG monitor. At the same time, the study app will record a short facial video. The app will not display results and will not be used for clinical care or treatment decisions.
The purpose of the study is to collect data to explore how these signals relate to standard measurements in people with heart failure. The findings may help inform future research.REC name
