  • Research summary

    Background:
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that mostly affects the lungs but also other organs. Physical activity and exercise training are essential parts of physiotherapy treatment for people with CF, which can improve fitness and maintain lung function and wellbeing. Studies have shown that delivering exercise training using online technology might have similar results with traditional in-person training and it can also reduce the risk of cross-infection. Therefore, a Virtual Leisure Centre was developed in the All-Wales Adult CF Centre Llandough to deliver specialised exercise classes online for people with CF.
    Aim:
To evaluate the perceptions of people with CF and healthcare professionals about a Virtual Leisure Centre service and to develop future activities to promote and maintenance of physical activity.

    Study Design:
This qualitative study will include one-to-one online interviews with 12 people with CF and 12 healthcare professionals, who will be recruited through the All Wales Adult CF Centre in Llandough. Recommendations of how future services of the Virtual Leisure Centre will be informed based on the combination of the perceptions of people with CF and healthcare professionals through 2 workshops.
All the demographic data will be descriptively analysed using the SPSS software version 25. All the qualitative data collected from interviews with people with CF and healthcare professionals will be analysed by using thematic analysis through NVivo 12 software.
