  • Research summary

Patients who need inpatient cardiac surgery after heart attack can wait up to three weeks. During this time the majority of patients are stable but confined to a ward. Movement and social interaction is restricted.Furthermore the risk of hospital acquire infection increases and it is costly. The virtual ward offers a mechanism to keep inpatients at home. They are contacted regularly by the nursing staff and if there is a clinical issue it is escalated to the relevant team. This trial aims to randomise patients who are waiting to the virtual ward or standard care. The virtual ward patients will be brought back into hospital for surgery the night before or the day of the operation. This pilot study aims to assess the safety of this strategy
