Research summary
Objectives
There is a current drive in the UK to increase post adoption support, with 19 million pounds being made available to adoptive families through the post-adoption support fund. Video Intervention to Promote Positive Parenting and Sensitive Discipline - Adoption (VIPP) is an attachment based intervention aimed at increasing parental sensitivity and attunement between adoptive parents’ and children. VIPP has been used so successfully with adoptive families in the Netherlands that it is routinely offered to all families adopting a child. The adoption landscape is, however, very different in the Netherlands where 93% of adopted children come from overseas, in the UK this figure is less than 1%.
Design
As part of a joint venture between the Tavistock and Portman Clinic and TACT (The Adolescent and Children’s Trust) a consortium of local authorities have had the opportunity to offer the VIPP intervention to families who have adoptive children under six years old who are between two months and one year post-placement. For the purposes of this project the families offered VIPP will complete routine clinical outcome measures as well as two additional measures of sensitivity and child behaviour. These measures will be used for routine outcome monitoring and audit purposes.
In order to more widely disseminate the findings of this pilot project families will be asked if they would consent to anonymously releasing their outcome for research purposes. At the end of intervention families will be asked if they would consent to complete a short qualitative interview to give feedback on the intervention again for research purposes.
