Research summary
Acute respiratory failure is a condition in which the body does not have enough oxygen, has high carbon dioxide, or both. It is a serious condition and affects the patient’s breathing. Patients sometimes need extra oxygen through support with a breathing machine or ‘mechanical ventilation’.
In critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU), both acute respiratory failure and acute kidney injury are very common. However, there are no studies exploring the effects of different ventilator strategies on kidney function.
We are investigating the effects of different ventilator strategies on kidneys in critically ill patients with acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. The results will advance the understanding of acute respiratory failure and serve to develop strategies for individualised management of this high-risk group and for future intervention trials.REC name
