  • Research summary

The Lifestyle Management Programme (LMP) is designed to deliver a weight management and exercise programme for people who are overweight and have hip or knee osteoarthritis. Patients referred to the programme have shown small improvements in body mass index, body weight, and hip and knee scores, however attendance dropped to 14% at 32-weeks.
Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the experiences and views of; patients referred to the LMP, professionals referring patients to the programme and professionals delivering the programme. We hope to understand how it might be possible to improve the programme’s overall success.
A qualitative research approach will be used, with group and individual interviews used to collect data. Interviews will be audio-recorded and written-out (transcribed). Patients who have been referred to the LMP (but not currently taking part), GPs, physiotherapists and orthopaedic nurses, exercise professionals and dieticians will be invited to an interview.
Patients will be sampled to include; 5-8 patients who attended the final session at 32 weeks, 5-8 patients who completed at least one session but did not finish the programme (two separate focus groups) and 5 patients who did not complete any sessions (individual interview). Potential participants will be identified through the LMP database. Eligible patients will be sent invitation letters and study documentation.
We will conduct one ‘delivering’ and one ‘referring’ professionals focus group of 5-8 professionals and five individual interviews with ‘referring GPs’. We will contact professionals by email, telephone or by attending team meetings. Participants will contact the research team at Bangor University if they are interested in taking part and to arrange the interview.
Qualitative data from interview audio-recordings will be analysed using the Framework method of qualitative data analysis. This will allow the data to be described according to key themes, concepts and emergent categories.
