  • Research summary

The study involves semi-structured interviews with qualitative thematic analysis exploring the views of future care planning in patients aged 70 years and over who have been admitted to hospital following an emergency and also explores the views of future care planning in nominated carers.

The areas of questioning can be broadly divided into four areas:
-exploring views of the language and medical terminology of care planning
-personal significance of care planning to patients and carers including perceived benefits or disadvantages
-what the content of a care plan should be
-whom patients believe a care plan should be shared with.

For both patients and carers, to contextualise the information some demographic questions including age and background are included.

    Study questionnaires:
Following the semi-structured interview, the participants will be offered an opportunity to fill out relevant questionnaires. For patients, health status and mood will be assessed with the Short Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36) questionnaires and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). For carers, an assessment with be made with the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) questionnaire. Both patients and carers will be offered the opportunity to complete a VAS (Visual analogue Scale) for mood.
