Research summary
Owing to the trauma experienced and witnessed whilst in active duty in the armed forces, it is unsurprising that Veterans can have serious and ongoing mental health issues. For example, studies such Maguen et al., (2012) highlighted the mental health symptoms, and their prevalence in Iraq war veterans and these presentations included suicidal ideation, depression, and PTSD. The current project consists of two separate studies of Veterans accessing the NHS Veterans’ Mental Health Complex Treatment Service (VMH CTS) in the North of England. Study 1 will be a mixed methods study of current NHS service provision for supporting Veterans’ adjustment, involving semi-structured interviews of staff and patients at the service. This study will inform practice-based evidence and the lived resettlement experience of Veterans’ accessing the Mental Health Complex Treatment Service. Study 2 will be a mixed methods study of identity and future selves in UK Veterans. This study will be a more exploratory study examining the link between adjustment issues to civilian life, future thinking and identity in UK Veterans.
