Research summary
The method by which patients with kidney failure dialyse contributes significantly to their burden of hospital investigations, admissions and procedures. A recent Scottish Vascular Access appraisal highlighted the impact of vascular access procedures and complications on how patients viewed their options for dialysis and there is widespread recognition that patient reported outcome measures are of significant value in engaging patients with chronic disease.
Despite multiple quality of life tools for chronic disease and renal disease, there is no currently available quality of life measure that is specific regarding the impact of creation or insertion of access for dialysis ( line , arterio venous fistula or arteriovenous graft and maintenance of the vascular access.A recent project has developed a tool to measure Quality of Life (VASQOL) derived from detailed qualitative interviews with renal patients using the capabilities model. Patient interviews are considered the most important of four steps identified by Rothman et al to ensure that high content validity is achieved and demonstrated.
The aim of this piece of research is to validate the recently developed Vascular Access Specific Quality of life measure that can be utilised in subsequent interventional trials. This validation will involve comparing the VASQOL with standard questionnaires used in quality of life measurement but will also assess the validity of this measure in capturing the impact of vascular access creation, maintenance and complications over time.
