Research summary
Patients with chronic kidney disease are at extra risk of heart attacks and strokes. One reason for this is thought to be because kidney damage leads to irreversible changes in these patients’ arteries. Alterations to proteins and genes might be responsible for these changes. We plan to use a unique resource of arteries donated by patients during transplant operations to study the relationship between changes in arteries and chronic kidney disease. In future, medicines that modify these pathways might be useful in preventing damage to patients’ arteries.
