  • Research summary

Total ankle replacement is a relatively new procedure used to improve pain and movement in patients with ankle arthritis. The VANTAGE total ankle replacement has been used in the UK since 2019 and so far, over 232 VANTAGE ankle replacements have been carried out in the UK.
The aim of our study is to collect comprehensive information on how well this ankle replacement performs to improve gait, physical activity and functional outcomes.
This will be done by asking questions about patient's mobility and pain, and looking at their ankle and walking pattern with a detailed gait assessment before and after the operation.
Patients who are eligible to have an ankle replacement surgery (according to study criteria) will be approached for their participation. The Information sheet will be provided and discussed. If willing to take part, they will be consented for the study.
After consented to take part in the research study they will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their ankle pain and mobility, the research physiotherapist will also assess the ankle movement and walking pattern (including gait analysis). This will take about 60 -90 minutes to complete and can be carried out at their routine clinic appointment or when they attend for your routine pre assessment clinic. Patients will still be seen by the clinical team at routine assessment times. At 1 and 2 year follow up assessment, research physiotherapist who will re-assess the ankle movement and walking pattern and ask participants to complete a questionnaire. Also undertake a details gait assessment. This is the same procedure as the assessment before the operation and will take about 60-90 minutes to complete. At the end of 2nd year follow up assessment, the study participation will be complete.
