  • Research summary

Patients who have undergone a leg amputation due to vascular disease often do not use a prosthetic limb. Carrying out physical tests with patients is usually done to assess how well a patient can function. Previous research shows that physical assessment with practical tests for patients who do not walk is limited, as there are few poor-quality physical tests available.

Therefore, we have developed a new physical test, VAMPP measure, to use with vascular amputee patients. Its primary use is to assess an amputee’s physical function, when they are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation. Healthcare professionals and patient participants provided feedback on this test in a previous research study, and changes were made to the VAMPP measure.

In this study we would like to assess if this physical test is practical and feasible to do in a healthcare setting. Also, we would like to assess the quality of this test by understanding the validity and reliability of carrying out this test with patients.

Therefore, we will invite patients to perform this new test. The VAMPP measure will be an assessment of sitting balance, upper limb strength and the assessment of transfers from one chair to another. Most of the assessments will be completed in a sitting position. We will also ask patients to complete other physical assessment tests and questionnaires, including grip strength and assessment of transfers, to evaluate if the VAMPP measure accurately measures what it intends to.

Additionally, we will show a video of a consented patient performing this measure to healthcare professionals. They will be asked to rate the patient on the VAMPP measure, to assess its reliability.
