Research summary
Observational valvular heart disease (VHD II) survey:
Cardiovascular (CV) diseases remain a leading cause of mortality and morbidity, and valvular heart diseases account for a significant part of these CV diseases in Europe. Since the first European survey on valvular heart disease in 2001, a number of factors are likely to have modified their care management. Therefore there is a particular need of a new European survey with the aim to re-assess and compare this survey results to the first conducted in 2001.
Adult patients with severe native valve disease or who previously had surgery for a valve disease, with no acute or active endocarditis and no complex congenital heart disease at the time of inclusion will be enrolled.
Patients will be included consecutively, after consenting, at the participating centre on hospitalization (in-patients) or during a routine visit (out-patients). This is an observational study, then no additional investigation will be performed and no treatment will be given to patients specifically for their participation in the survey which are not a part of the routine clinical management for their disease.
Enrollment of approximately 5000 patients is expected over all the countries and centres during a 3-month period for each centre. A follow-up assessment after 6 months can be made either by phone or during a patient visit.REC name
