  • Research summary

10% of all hospitalised patients in the UK will receive an error in their care, which is defined as being the failure of a planned action to be completed as intended or the use of a wrong plan to achieve an aim, in their treatment. (Milligan 2006)
Following the publication of the Francis Report (2013) and the Berwick Report (2013), the major shift is from a " blame" culture to that of a " No-blame" or a "Just" culture where errors are reported; responsibility taken and lessons learnt resulting in a reduction in errors.
However, being involved in adverse events can have serious detrimental impact on staff; affecting their health, causing emotional distress and performance in the workplace, symptoms that are characteristic of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome becoming the Second Victim . (Wu2000) Therefore support systems not only need to be established but need to be widely communicated so that staff are aware of available resources, are receptive to accepting help, and know how to access assistance.
This research intends to evaluate the use of peer support in the form of Values Based Reflective Practice(VBRP®). This is a model of reflecting on practice within the context of professional and personal values leading to reduced stress and absenteeism. VBRP is not a form of Critical Debriefing but it may offer support to allow staff to have the confidence to report adverse events whereby improving patient safety and reduce the risk of them becoming a Second Victim.
The research consists of working with 2 participant groups:
    I. All the clinical staff in Tayside Cancer Centre. This group will receive the short open-ended questionnaire.
II. 8 clinical staff working at advance practice level. This group will be participants of the VBRP® group.
