  • Research summary

The perinatal mental health value scorecard is being introduced for use by health visitors for improving outcomes and experiences for women in pregnancy and up to one year postnatally.
The primary purpose of this research study will be to measure changes in service delivery in terms of the early detection of perinatal mental health problems, consistency of services offered and measures used and, prompt and appropriate responses to mental illness in perinatal women. It will also assess the stated objectives of the scorecard in its ability to address important experience and outcome indicators that mothers state are most relevant to them. It will also compare the use and outcomes of the scorecard across four individual sites at the first level and nationally at the second level.
This research study will make use of a variety of data sources and analyses including:
    - Secondary analysis of routine clinical data, both national and local, pre and post scorecard implementation.
    - Secondary analysis of data collected for the purposes of monitoring the scorecard intervention such as, quality improvement measures, activity data from health visitors and learning set field notes.
    - Primary analysis of qualitative data collected through interviews and focus groups with service users and health visitors and of survey data collected from health visitors.
The research study will take a realistic evaluation approach to data analysis in that it will focus on the processes involved within the context of each research site that facilitates or impedes the successful use of the scorecard. The final study report will look to make recommendations for the successful national roll out of the scorecard.
