  • Research summary

The renal version of the Integrated Patient Outcome Scale (IPOS-Renal) is a short set of questions for use by people with advanced kidney disease to comprehensively assess their care needs. These include troublesome symptoms (like pain and itch) plus other concerns (like anxiety or worry, and information needed). There is also a staff version of the IPOS-Renal, for use when people are too unwell to complete for themselves.

We would like to test IPOS-Renal to see if it works well. Whilst IPOS works well and behaves as expected for people with advanced illness, there are additional symptoms and concerns among people with advanced kidney disease which we have included in IPOS-Renal. This measure will be very useful to monitor people's symptoms and concerns over time, ensure they are addressed, as well as demonstrate benefits of treatment.

The study will assess whether IPOS-Renal works by recruiting people with stage 5 chronic kidney disease, either having dialysis or not. At the first time point the patient will complete the IPOS-Renal and two other assessment tools previously tested in this population. Staff who know the patient will complete the IPOS-Renal (staff version) and other assessment tools at the same time. At the second time point (7-21 days later), the IPOS-Renal is completed again by both patients and staff. Phase of illness and change in disease status is also assessed at both time points to help understand how IPOS-Renal works.

The study will be conducted from the Department of Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation at King's College London. People with advanced kidney disease will be recruited from the Renal Department in the Northern General hospital in Sheffield, United Kingdom and it's satellite units.
