  • Research summary

The study aims to establish whether the Short Parallel Assessments of Neuropsychological Status (SPANS) is a valid and useful tool for the assessment of Stroke survivors. The SPANS is a brief cognitive assessment tool that was developed for use in acquired brain injury populations. It provides normed scores for 7 different areas of cognition allowing rehabilitation plans and other treatment to target/allow for specific areas of impairment. The SPANS has already been shown to be valid for use in a sample of participants with acquired brain injuries, including several stroke survivors. However in order for this test to be able to be used clinically in this population further testing is needed in order to better examine its validity and utility in this population. This study therefore aims to administer the SPANS to a population of patients who have previously suffered a stroke in order to examine its reliability and validity in this population. Participants will be recruited from Leicester General Hospital's stroke ward to investigate the validity of the test an inpatient Stroke population. As part of the investigation into the SPANS utility/validity scores will be correlated with several other assessments including the cognitive assessment currently commonly used (the Montreal Cognitive Assessment), a battery of commonly used neuropsychological tests selected by the researcher and tests of activities of daily living. Participants involvement will last for between 2-5 weeks, and involve a weekly meeting with the researcher to complete the cognitive assessments and questionnaires.
