Research summary
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an Idiopathic Inflammatory Demyelinating Disease of the central nervous system (CNS). It frequently affects people between 20 and 40 years of age. While the life expectancy for people with MS (PwMS) approaches that of the general population, they do suffer from multiple disabilities. Health related quality of life ( HRQOL) is a multidimensional construct that includes physical, mental, and social health, is increasingly recognized as an important outcome of health policy studies, as well as treatment trials. HRQOL inventories help clinicians appreciate patient priorities and facilitate physician-patient communication and shared decision making. Multiple Sclerosis Quality Of Life-54 (MSQOL-54) is a valid and reliable 54 item scale. A major limitation of MSQOL-54 is that it requires considerable time to complete and scores have to be calculated using an algorithm. A long questionnaire is particularly challenging for patients suffering from fatigue, one of the commonest MS symptoms. Recently Solari et al did a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch modelling on the Italian version of MSQOL-54s and developed a short29 item version MS QoL -29. MSQOL-29 is 50% shorter than MSQOL-54, yet preserves key quality of life dimensions. It took only 10 minutes to administer ( Solari et al).
The Aim of this trial is to test the validity and reliability of MSQOL-29 in an English speaking population. This will be the first study to test MSQOL -29 in English. The english speaking participants with MS will be identified from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The participants will be asked to complete both MSQoL-54 MSQoL-29. The participants will be asked to come back after 4 weeks and complete the MSQoL-29. The socio-demographic data and EDSS will be obtained by reviewing the medical records. The data will be used to calculate validity and relaibility of MSQoL-29.REC name
