  • Research summary

Aim - to validate the data held on a national primary care database for the use in healthcare research.

Background - The use of large, population databases is increasingly important in healthcare research. They give an opportunity to study all individuals with a condition, rather than only those recruited into clinical trials or attending for hospital appointments. This is important as these patients may not represent all patients with the condition of interest. A criticism of these databases is that the data may not always be accurate for conditions that are diagnosed in hospitals. It is therefore important that these databases are checked and validated to prevent spurious conclusion being drawn from any research using them.

The aim of this study is to check whether the data held on the hospital medical records in a selection of patients reflects the data that is recorded on the SystmOne primary care database.

Methods- SystmOne is a large primary care database holding records on >28million citizens in the United Kingdom. We will recruit patients from inflammatory bowel disease outpatient clinics at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and check their data against that held on the SystmOne PCD. All participants will be asked for written informed consent. We plan to include data on 150 patients, with the coverage of 80% for LTHT patients on SystmOne this will result in a cohort of 120 patients whose data can be compared.

Implications - If there is concordance between the datasets this will add to the validity of using this data for healthcare research making it more applicable to patients, clinicians and healthcare commissioners.
