Research summary
This research study will validate a Measure of Self that can be used with people in all stages of dementia. The measure has been piloted to confirm that the methods of administration are appropriate for people with mild to moderate dementia. The measure is intended to be used to evaluate interventions designed to enhance the care of people with dementia, and be used as a basis for further research involving self and dementia, because maintenance of self is central to good quality person-centred care. The content of the measure and methods of administration have been developed after extensive consultation with international experts in the fields of dementia and self, with ‘experts by experience’ (service users) and lay members of the Alzheimer’s Society. The aims of this validation study are to establish the reliability and validity of the measure, and confirm that it can be used with people with moderate to severe dementia. It is important to include this group of people because they will be the recipients of the interventions that the Measure of Self is intended to evaluate. The validation study will involve two groups of participants: people with dementia and a control group of adults with no memory impairment. The study will be conducted at sites that are familiar to the participants, such as places of residence, day centres, or support groups. The participants will be involved for no more than three weeks from initial consent to completion of the tasks. Both groups will complete a measure of cognitive ability (ACE-III or FAST Scale) before performing the Measure of Self on two occasions, two weeks apart (for test-retest reliability). The control group will also complete the Measure of Self on two occasions, and two gold standard measures of self and identity on one occasion (for convergent validity).
