  • Research summary

The burden of cancer on quality of life (QoL) is well recognised. While clinical trials and real-world data show the positive effects of routine QoL assessment on patient wellbeing, full implementation of QoL assessment in routine oncology practice is not yet part of standard of care.

The research outlined in this application forms part of a larger, EU funded programme which aims to develop, pilot and validate the European Oncology Quality of Life toolkit (EUonQoL-Kit), which will be a unified system for the assessment of QoL. The EUonQoL-Kit (developed in a previous study REC: 327572. Reference: 23/PR/0739, 20/06/2023) includes three electronic questionnaires, specifically designed for different disease phases (patients in active treatment, survivors, and patients in palliative care), available in both static and dynamic versions.

The aim of this observational study is to pilot test the EUonQoL-Kit to assess its usability and psychometric properties. Participants from each of the target groups (Active Treatment, Survivors, Palliative Care) will be asked to fill in the electronic version of the EUonQoL-Kit. To assess the acceptability, validity, and reliability of the EUonQoL-Kit, three subgroups out of the total sample of participants will be randomly selected to fill in one additional questionnaires (see A13 for more details).

The results will inform the finalisation of the EUonQol-Kit that will be implemented across Europe to inform cancer care and health policy. The survey will also provide preliminary estimates of QoL across different European countries, as well as data on socio-demographic and clinical factors potentially associated with QoL in European cancer patients and survivors.
