Research summary
Social cognition refers to the ability to use social cues to infer the meaning and intentions behind the behaviour of others in order to respond in a socially adaptive manner (McDonald, 2017). Several studies have linked social cognition difficulties to poorer psychosocial outcomes in neurological conditions, highlighting the need to include this area of cognition into routine assessments in neurological conditions. However, assessment of this domain remains controversial due to availability of well-validated measures for this population. The current proposal aims to validate a recently developed social cognition test, namely the Edinburgh Social Cognition Test (ESCoT), which measures both affective and cognitive components of theory of mind (ToM) as well as social decision making, in individuals following an acquired brain injury (ABI).
