  • Research summary

The aim is to validate the Substance Use Screening for Specialists (SUSS) tool, with a sample of service users referred to Leeds Addiction Unit (LAU). This research will assess whether the SUSS demonstrates adequate reliability and validity for use in specialist services and whether the scores are comparable to the gold standard tools; the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), developed by the World Health Organisation. The package of outcome measures used at LAU will also be measured against the Treatment Outcomes Profile (TOP) completed at the first research interview and the Maudsley Addiction Profile (MAP) completed at the second research interview.

Service users referred to LAU will be eligible to take part in the study and all data collection will happen at this site. Each participant will be in the study for three months, consisting of two interviews. The first interview will be within two weeks of the participant’s first attendance to LAU and will last approximately 20 minutes. The second interview will be within two weeks of a three month follow up appointment and will last approximately 45 minutes. The following measures are completed as part of routine practice: Leeds Dependence Questionnaire (LDQ), Social Satisfaction Questionnaire (SSQ), Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-10 (CORE-10), EQ-5D 3L and societal impact measures. Additionally, for the research, participants will be asked to complete the AUDIT, ASSIST, TOP and MAP.
