  • Research summary

Individuals with CF are at a higher risk of experiencing anxiety and depression than the general population and this can be associated with poor treatment adherence, poor health outcomes and increased healthcare costs.
There are concerns that current measures, including the Patient Health Questionnaire and the Generalised Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire do not adequately detect all types of distress that individuals with CF may experience. Consequently, The Distress in Cystic Fibrosis Scale (DCFS) was developed to detect distress in a CF population, that although may not show up as anxiety or depression, can have marked impact on health and well-being. It has 23 questions ranging from physical problems to practical concerns about CF.
This study aims to explore whether the DCFS is a valid measure and reliable measure.
Participants will be recruited from the West of Scotland Adult Cystic Fibrosis Service (WoSACFS) through multi-disciplinary team clinics and in-patient wards. If interested in taking part, participants will be provided with a research pack containing a participant information sheet with further information about the study and will have the opportunity to ask any questions. If they wish to take part, they will be asked to sign a consent form.
Participants will complete 6 different questionnaires looking at their mood, quality of life, current levels of distress, demographic information, and evaluation form. They will have the option to complete the questionnaires at their appointment or complete them at home and post back using the pre-paid envelope. Statistical analyses will then be conducted to evaluate the reliability and validity of the DCFS.
If found to have good reliability and validity, the DCFS could be used as an accurate screening tool of distress in a CF population.
