Research summary
The aim of this study is to validate a new "Simple Dietary Questionnaire" for (a) identifying whether a patient is suitable for a future controlled trial of a dietary intervention to treat depression, (b) determine whether the dietary questionnaire is sensitive to change after a treatment for depression (c) whether there are differences in the diet between depressed patients and controls. Patients with depression will be eligible. In Phase 1, we will recruit up to 91 depressed patients to keep a food diary and compare this against the new self-report questionnaire after one month. Patients will be recruited at a various treatment sites in the trust.
In Phase 2 we will compare the results of the questionnaire against a "healthy" control group of adults without depression (n=50). These will be recruited from staff and students by an advertisement on email and noticeboards at KCL and the Trust.
In Phase 3 we will compare the results of the questionnaire after a sample of the depressed patients have been treated to determine if their diet has changed. The questionnaire will therefore be used in a longer term trial to evaluate a dietary intervention as a treatment for depression.
The translational potential is to effect a novel treatment of depression and reduce the burden of suffering and costs.REC name
