  • Research summary

There is currently a lot of interest in low-carbohydrate diets and how they can be used to manage conditions such as obesity and diabetes. Unfortunately, research in this area is difficult to interpret as there is currently no quick and reliable way of assessing how much carbohydrate a person consumes. A 4 or 7-day food diary is the best method to determine how much carbohydrate a person consumes but this is time-consuming for the participant to fill in, and also time consuming for the data to be entered and analysed. The aim of this study is to see how well a new carbohydrate intake questionnaire which has been developed by nutrition researchers at King's College London compares against a much more time consuming 4-day food diary.

For this study 200 patients who are currently following or are keen to start following a carbohydrate restriction diet will be asked to complete a 4-day food diary and the new carbohydrate intake questionnaire. They will be told about the study by their GP, dietitian or nurse and given one questionnaire and one diary to complete. The diary will be completed over 4 days and the patients will be asked to complete the questionnaire on the day which best represents a usual intake. Once completed, the questionnaires and the diaries will be analysed by staff at King's College London and compared to see how well the carbohydrate questionnaire is able to measure a person's carbohydrate intake compared to the 4-day food diary. At no time will any identifiable information be collected. The questionnaire and food diary will be numbered so that they can be compared correctly, but at no time will any names, dates of birth, or any clinical information be collected.
