Research summary
Validation of a nutrition self-screening tool for outpatients with inflammatory bowel disease.
The purpose of this research is to test whether a nutrition self-screening tool for outpatients with inflammatory bowel disease is valid for use by assessing the repeatability of the nutrition self-screening tool in IBD outpatient clinics.
Malnutrition is a common symptom of IBD affecting between 20 – 85% of patients. Malnutrition is associated with suboptimal health outcomes, reduced quality of life, fatigue, and diminished strength. The wide range in the prevalence of malnutrition is largely dependent on which assessment methods are utilised, disease severity and disease location. The implementation of a nutrition screening tool will help to make patient access to dietitians and nutrition and diet information more equitable for patients with IBD.
This study will validate a nutrition self-screening tool in patients with inflammatory bowel disease aged at least 16 years who attend gastroenterology outpatient clinic appointments at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease will be invited to take part from out-patient clinics. Patients who have provided informed consent will be asked to completed the online screening tool before or after their outpatient clinic appointment. The screening tool comprises 5 questions and either classifies people as either low, moderate or high nutritional risk. All patients will be asked to complete the same screening tool again. Patients will be sent the link to the questionnaire via email one week later to determine whether the tool is repeatable over time.
