  • Research summary

The proposed study, funded by the University of Hull, aims to investigate the psychometric properties of the Herth Hope Index for people living with dementia. The Herth Hope index is a questionnaire that measures levels of hope. People living with dementia may view hope differently and reevaluate their hopes based on their experiences with age and dementia (Wolverson et al, 2010). For this reason, a measure of hope would need to be validated among people living with dementia. The research aims to investigate the psychometric properties of the Herth Hope Index by measuring scores on the Herth Hope Index compared with scores on depression, wellbeing and optimism scales. A voluntary sample of participants living with dementia will be recruited using online advertisement and advertisement across national organisations (e.g., Join Dementia Research, Dementia UK, Alzheimer’s Society), local dementia charities and the NHS. The study consists of four questionnaires which can be completed online or in paper format and the study will take approximately 30 minutes per participant. Not only will this study fill a gap in the existing literature, but having a validated a measure of hope for people living with dementia will remove a significant barrier for future research and provide a tool to help evaluate the usefulness of wellbeing psycho-social interventions (e.g., support/skills groups), therefore having the potential to inform the future development of interventions supporting people to live well with dementia.
