Research summary
Research Summary:
HOME (Harmonising Outcome Measures for Eczema) is an international collaboration that has been developed to agree outcomes that should be reported in all eczema trials. This will mean research trials of eczema treatments can be compared and the effectiveness of treatments determined. Long-term control of eczema is one of four outcomes that HOME has recommended to be measured in all eczema trials. However, there has been uncertainty about how to define and measure it.RECAP is a patient-reposed outcome measure of eczema control and has been developed by a team at the University of Nottingham. This project will assess the validity and reliability of RECAP. In other words, the project aims to determine whether RECAP measures what it claims to measure and whether the questionnaire produces consistent results.
This work will inform decision making at the next HOME consensus meeting (HOME VII) in Japan in 2019. It will help us to decide whether a new questionnaire about eczema control can be used in research trials and at medical appointments.
In order to assess the validity and reliability of RECAP, this project aims to recruit patients with eczema or carers who look after children with eczema. Participants will be recruited through dermatology clinics in the West of England and through poster advertisements in waiting rooms of General Practice surgeries. The questionnaire will take 15-20 minutes to complete and include questions about their eczema and general health. Four weeks later, they will be invited to fill out a 5 minute online follow up questionnaire.
Lay summary of study results:
RECAP appears to have good acceptability and validity as a measure of eczema but further research with larger numbers of diverse patients is needed before it can be recommended for routine use in dermatology clinics.REC name
