  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to explore experiences of refugee mothers who have travelled to the United Kingdom (UK) with their children.

Refugees face significant adversity which, impacts on their mental health and well-being and there are higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression in comparison to the local population (Hameed et al., 2018). Furthermore, evidence suggests that the psychological impact on refugee mothers is significant, increasing the risk of psychological harm to their children (Panter‐Brick et al., 2014) and having a long-term impact on the mother-child dyadic relationship (Feng et al., 2007).

The experiences of motherhood along with their experiences of maternal protection has been largely ignored in existing refugee research which has focused on the needs of the child (Rice, & Else-Quest, 2005).

During this study, refugees that are currently accessing services across the West Midlands and Warwickshire, will be asked to be interviewed about their experiences of motherhood on their journey to the UK and experiences of motherhood while in the UK.

Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) will be used to gain a rich insight into the lived experiences of motherhood in refugees in the UK.
