Research summary
This study addresses "usual care," that is routine care received by care home residents to maintain their health and treat disease. An aspect of usual care is hydration practice and this will be used as a focal point for observation. The aim of the study is to develop understanding of the processes, challenges and barriers to providing “usual care” for people with dementia living in care homes. Non-participant covert observation of usual care with a specific focus on resident drinking behaviour and staff hydration practice will be undertaken in 4 care homes with up to a maximum sample of 24 residents with dementia and care home staff (maximum 80). Participants will not be informed of the specific focus on observing drinking behaviour and hydration practice. Framework analysis will be applied to observation records and researcher notes.
