Research summary
Title Using patient experiences to develop services for chronic pain.
Rationale: Patient centred care can improve patients' experiences of using healthcare services.
Design: This study will use a service improvement methodology, Experience-based Co-design (EBCD), to capture and improve experiences for patients using chronic pain services at Royal Preston Hospital.
The study will take place in three parts:
Part 1 (Weeks 1 to 4) Capturing the experience:
Video recorded interviews are conducted with patients to capture a wide range of experiences of care in chronic pain servicesPart 2 (Weeks 1 to 8) Understanding the experience:
Video recorded interviews are analysed to identify a number of 'touchpoints.' Touchpoints are moments when patients experience heightened emotions during their interactions with healthcare services and staff. All the filmed interviews are then edited and individual clips from each film are collated to produce a short 'trigger' film which illustrates the key touchpoints. Once the trigger film is prepared, a patient experience event is held in which the participants have the opportunity to review the collated trigger film and make recommendations for further editing if required. At this event patients will be asked to participate in activities which help to identify what are the key areas for service improvement, and to make suggestions about how to redesign services.Part 3 (Week 8 and ongoing for up to 12 months) Improving the experience:
The chief investigator will hold a meeting for staff from chronic pain services, who will be shown the trigger film and presented with the patients' recommendations for service improvement. This will lead to discussion and identification of service improvement measures or priorities to be taken forward. Plans for service improvement work streams will be arranged at this meeting.REC name
