Data collection arrangements
When blood is donated to the National Health Service Blood and Transplant to provide samples for clinical use, a byproduct of the apheresis process are leucocyte cones. These are made available for purchase as non-clinical components and contain blood that is enriched with many different cell types found naturally in the blood. The cells are useful in many assays employed in biological research. The research at UCB is focused on developing new drugs to treat severe inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and asthma. The leucocyte cone derived cells are key components of assays used in the research effort to further understand these diseases and in the associated development of drugs that ultimately, are aimed at providing therapeutic treatments.
