  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to find out the views of people with a diagnosis of psychosis and their carers on the possibility of antipsychotic medication being tailored to their biological makeup. This is known as stratified medicine. A researcher on the main clinical trial defines stratified medicine as 'the subdivision of individuals with the same diagnosis into two or more subgroups, who are predicted to respond to different treatments'. Six focus groups with service users and one with carers will be conducted. The academic researchers are also mental health service users with experience of taking psychiatric medication; this shared background can promote open and honest discussion with participants. The focus groups will be digitally recorded and transcribed and analysed for recurring themes. These results will ultimately be delivered to researchers conducting the main study, so that they can consider the views of people similar to those who will be participating in the eventual clinical trial.
