  • Research summary

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a range of conditions affecting the muscles and / or joints of the jaw which can be the cause of persistent pain in up to 15% of the population. Evidence suggests that self-management is the most effective form of treatment and that if introduced at an early stage (before 6 months) this can have a significant impact in reducing pain, reducing the need for additional appointments and preventing the pain from becoming persistent. However it is unusual at present for patients to be introduced to self-management at an early stage for TMD. This is partly because dentists are not sure what form of self-management to suggest and how to introduce it to patients. The aim of this research is to speak to patients with TMD about their views of self-management, what they do and do not find helpful and factors that may support or block their ability to regularly use self-management strategies. This will then inform further research co-producing an intervention to support patients with TMD to use self-management from an early stage. Qualitative interviews will be carried out by telephone or face-to-face, recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data will be analysed thematically using the constant comparative method. The results will provide information about self-management in this population which can be used to support the co-production of an accessible intervention to support self-management in the early stages of TMD.
