Research summary
During the process of discovering potential new candidate drugs it is is key to identify compounds that will have the desired duration of action in the patient. Together with synthetic medicinal chemistry and biological screening programs, in vitro assessment of the metabolic stability using human liver cells (hepatocytes) and the extent of binding of compounds to human lung tissue (for respiratory diseases) helps identify compounds with the best chance of success in the species of interest - namely humans. These studies do not relate to any clinical trial and use human derived tissue from commercial suppliers. Such studies are performed during the course of all new candidate drug research programs.
