  • Research summary

Previous literature suggests that having weak or compromised muscles within the hip complex, proves a higher risk for a person developing muscular skeletal injuries throughout their lower limbs. Furthermore, research also suggests that improving muscle strength throughout the hip complex could act as a preventer for diseases such as osteoarthritis. Throughout the NHS and private practice the two professional groups monitored by the health and care professions council continuously seeing patients with muscular skeletal injuries are physiotherapists and podiatrists. Despite this, there has been no research carried out exploring to what extent these professions assess the hip complex when patients attend with such injuries. Therefore, via qualitative methods, this study intends to explore firstly, if hip assessments are routinely undertaken and secondly, to what extent and the reasons practitioners assess the hip.
