Consent is taken by the clinical team who file the consent documents securely on NHS premises. Samples are collected into pre-labelled containers and transported to the Jack Birch Unit at the University of York either by the clinical or research team (or by courier), using Royal Mail-approved biological transport containers (BioPack). The JBU has card-restricted access and the tissues are stored in padlocked fridges upon arrival if not immediately processed. All computers in the JBU are password-protected with restricted drive access for human tissue workers. Sample storage facilities in the JBU meet HTA standards.

  • Research programme

We are a collaboration of scientists, clinicians and industry specialists with interests in diseases of the urinary tract. We share a common vision that integrating our knowledge of and expertise in human urothelial biology and urinary tract disease will lead to new therapies for urological conditions such as painful bladder syndrome, overactive bladder and recurrent urinary tract infection, as well as reducing the incidence of renal damage. We support a coordinated network wherin we a) promote inclusive cross-disciplinary and cross-speciality communication; b) advance insight by developing data-based resources representing urothelium from normal, disease and treated versus in vitro states; and c) facilitate the selection and delivery of therapy to patients.
