Research summary
Microbiosensor Ltd have SBRI (Dept of Health) funding to develop a test which will help to diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs, or water infection) and to identify which antibiotic will be most effective in treating an infection. This test is intended for use in elderly care home settings, where UTIs are common. Elderly persons with UTI can become weak and disorientated rapidly, and can quickly end up being admitted to hospital. If information on which is the best antibiotic to treat an infection can be given to a GP more quickly, this deterioration, and hospital admission might be prevented. In order to develop a test, and to ensure that it works well, a supply of elderly urine is needed (urine changes as we age - so non-elderly urine is not suitable). This project aims to collect regular samples of urine from care homes in a manner which does not affect the social, or medical care of the residents. The samples will be used in the companies laboratories to develop the test.
