Research summary
This is a study looking at the challenges, expectations, needs and goals of the nutritional care of children with kidney disease. It aims to identify key themes about the thoughts that children and their families have regarding this important area of medical care through interviews and focus groups.
In chronic kidney disease (CKD) the kidneys do not work as well as in other people. It can start at birth or develop later, can be caused by lots of different reasons, and the kidneys can be slightly or severely impaired. Improving nutrition of these children may help improve health both in childhood and then as adults, and delay the progression of disease.
Children with CKD may experience nausea and vomiting, poor appetites, many restrictions on diet, and dialysis. Therefore, they are at particular risk of failing to meet their nutritional needs and subsequent deficiencies, impacting on growth and development, as well as their health day-to-day. This study is trying to find out what are the best ways to provide nutritional support to families. The study is comprised of a series of in-depth one-to-one interviews and focus group-style discussions with children and young-people with kidney disease; parents/carers of children and young-people with kidney disease; and healthcare professionals.
